TECHNICAL NOTES FROM OUR MASTER TECHNICIAN
Produced in model years 2007 to 2012, the Dodge Nitro, and other 2007+ Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep models presented with power window regulators consisting of what we call floating glass carriers.
What’s interesting about this system is that it employs a cable system that is pulled by a motor, similarly to an elevator, except that there is no track or “shaft” for the glass carrier to secure to, therefore it “floats”. The only thing constraining and restricting the glass carrier is the way it’s connected to the glass. The frame of the door actually stabilizes the glass, which in turn stabilized the glass carrier on the regulator assembly.
We thought long and hard about this design and have concluded that the intent behind it was likely to cut the cost of the system and the weight of the material used to lift the glass. This reduced the overall weight of the vehicle, lending to the other factors that increased fuel economy in this vehicle. The design flaw most clear to our team at Power Window Repair is the extra stress and load that’s added to the system because it lacks the track or shaft found in other power window regulator designs.
The most common issue we see with the Dodge Nitro concerns the upper pulley wheel at the top of the regulator panel. This pulley wheel can deform or break, releasing the cable tensioning and causing the glass to drop freely into the panel. We see it all the time. Once the glass is down, it’s generally not retrievable without taking off the interior panel and releasing the glass carrier from the glass.
CAUTION: We have yet to work on a Dodge Nitro power window behind someone else, other than the dealer and not have to clean up his or her mess! Most skilled mechanics have zero idea what they’re doing with these more modern styled vehicles and we’re not exaggerating. There’s a reason why we work for so many repair shops in Phoenix. They know what they do best and would much rather leave the power window repairs to the experts, Power Window Repair. We’ve seen the door handle rod linkage broken, the door lock linkage broke, wire harness plugs and panel clips broken. All of which, must be removed and disconnected before you can completely remove the door panel. That takes skill! Extreme care is taken when our technicians remove a door panel on this vehicle. Having the proper tools for this repair is a must!
What We Do
At Power Window Repair, we only repair OEM Dodge Nitro power window regulators. We believe so strongly in our proprietary method of repair that we have an additional fee for all non-rebuildable cores. Power Window Repair defines a “non-rebuildable” window regulator core as an aftermarket, non-OEM window regulator or an OEM window regulator that someone has attempted to repair unsuccessfully. When this happens, we simply add that fee for our rebuilt OEM core and we install quality and reliability back in your door!
While the power window regulator is generally what we receive calls for, we do see issues with master power window switch on the drivers door. You can test the switches by pressing them one after another. Do you feel something different from one switch to another? If you’re not getting a click or electrical actuation, or you feel sponginess under your finger, your power window switch could be bad. There is an aftermarket part on the market for the Dodge Nitro, but it won’t fit the vehicle. You’re only resource for this switch is going to be the dealership.
How We Do It. There’s a method to our madness!
Our entire existence surrounds providing our customers with a repair they can count on. If we are going to stake our good reputation on a repair, you can bet we’ll need to do it our way! The reasons are simple. Our repair is stronger and superior to even the original OEM design, aftermarket parts are made with the cheapest of materials and are inferior, and most importantly any repair done in a junkyard or slapped together is never going to be worth the money!
Our system of repair includes the use of a cantilever load spreader and a heavy-duty metal pulley wheel, as opposed to the original plastic. We also re-tension the regulator upon installation, which would be difficult to explain. It’s one of those things we just do and it’s absolutely ingenious. Because there is not a track system, that floating glass carrier can cause problems in the tensioning and installation process. If everything isn’t just right, it will be impossible to attach the glass carrier system. Believe us when we say that we don’t recommend this repair for a DIY enthusiast. This is a complex system and it’s not hard to break other parts in the door. What you thought was going to save you money could quickly cost you an arm and a leg.
While the power window regulator is likely to go first, we do occasionally see power window motor failure in about 1 of every 80 calls. That’s not very often.
We’ve heard it all. From saying they just replaced it months ago themselves, to they’ve paid someone to do it 9 months ago and now they’re being asked for more labor to install the part under warranty. This just reinforces what we already know. While the price looks right, aftermarket parts are inferior to the OEM part. Side by side, there’s no comparison. These power window regulators often break under warranty, causing you to pay more in labor at your mechanics or in your time and labor shipping parts back and forth, uninstalling and reinstalling. That process can quickly turn into a shade-tree mechanics nightmare.
While we understand that money is often a factor in the decision making process, PLEASE DON’T TAKE YOUR NICE CAR TO A MEAN OLD JUNKYARD OR LET SOMEONE WHO IS INEXPERIENCED WORK ON IT! It’s immediately evident to us when someone inexperienced has been in the door of a vehicle before us. You can’t fool our technicians. These repairs are often crude and in turn have damaged some of the internal workings of the door, for example the power window switch connectors, interior door handle linkage, the door lock system, speakers and wire harness. The repair may have looked enticing and may have even appeared to work for a short time, but it’s going to cause one whopper of a headache later.
